In a publication launched in November 2009 entitled \u201c<a title=\"OECD Territorial Reviews: Toronto, Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/document\/1\/0,3343,en_2649_34413_43985281_1_1_1_1,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">OECD Territorial Reviews: Toronto, Canada<\/a>\u201d, several of the GTA\u2019s transportation challenges are collectively identified as a key policy issue. They include traffic congestion problems (70% of commuters use cars), poorly integrated regional transit services, and relatively underdeveloped public transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>To address this key policy issue, one of the publication\u2019s key recommendations is to \u201ctackle transportation challenges by creating incentives for reducing car use, access to additional revenue sources, [and] longer term funding commitments by federal government for investment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here in <a title=\"York Region Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.york.ca\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">York Region<\/a>, we are doing our part to tackle these transportation challenges with such <a title=\"vivaNext Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">vivaNext <\/a>initiatives as the <a title=\"Rapidways\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/rapidways\" target=\"_blank\">rapidways<\/a>, <a title=\"Subways\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/subways\" target=\"_blank\">subways<\/a> and proposed<a title=\"LRTs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/light_rail\" target=\"_blank\"> LRTs<\/a>. In addition to making it faster and easier to get in and out of the GTA, they will make it up to 40% faster to travel along our Region\u2019s busiest corridors.
