It can be hard to understand what they\u2019re doing exactly, but things can get even more confusing when construction terminology gets thrown around. To help anyone who might be interested we\u2019ve compiled a list of our most often used terms, just for the fun of it &#8211;<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"657\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Abutment<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">A structure   located at the ends of a bridge, where the bridge slab adjoins the   approaching roadway.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Archaeological Testing\/Assessment<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">The examination   of limited areas for the purposes of identifying historical artifacts. We do   this work to meet the requirements of the 2007 North Yonge Street Corridor   Public Transit Improvements Environmental Assessment, which identifies areas   of potential archaeological interest along the Yonge Street corridor, so that   we can ensure any important historical artifacts are identified before the   roadway is widened for the rapidway.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Backfill<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">Material used   to replace, or the act of replacing material, removed during construction.   Also, may denote material placed, or the act of placing material, adjacent to   structures.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Bore Holes<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">Drilling into   the ground to bring up samples of earth for testing.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Boulevard<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">A   strip of grass between a\u00a0sidewalk\u00a0and a road, located above a curb.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Bridge Pier<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">A supporting   structure at the junction of connecting spans of a bridge.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"177\" valign=\"top\">Caissons<\/td>\n<td width=\"480\" valign=\"top\">A cylindrical concrete   foundation that penetrates through soil to rest upon an underlying stratum of   rock. Data   and electrical cables are laid out within PVC conduits and bundled together;   these groupings of conduit are protected by concrete and metal casings.
