While he remarked that some people do things not normally considered polite for public spaces, Urban Affairs writer Christopher Hume <a title=\"Toronto Star article: TTC feels like home even before you get there\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2015\/04\/12\/ttc-feels-like-home-even-before-you-get-there-hume.html\" target=\"_blank\">also noted that even with less privacy, riders have more freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in a moving subway,\u201d he wrote, \u201cit\u2019s easier to put on lipstick than it is driving on Highway 401. It\u2019s also easier to eat, drink, read and tend to one\u2019s appearance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People who use transit regularly use the time in a variety of ways that are either impossible or risky when driving a car. They read books, work on laptops, watch TV, talk to other riders, snooze \u2013 and yes, put on makeup or simply stare into space at the end of a busy day.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t worry about being cut off in traffic or being stuck behind a sander during a snowstorm. Parking and finding a gas station are also non-issues, and <a title=\"http:\/\/www.transitpass.ca - website about the federal tax credit for using public transit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.transitpass.ca\/transit_e.php\" target=\"_blank\">riders save thousands of dollars a year<\/a> in car depreciation, gas and insurance. And let\u2019s not forget that they also get tax credits for transit passes like the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.YRT.ca - info about Viva and YRT monthly passes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yorkregiontransit.com\/en\/farespasses\/monthlypass.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Viva Monthly Pass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you trade your car keys for a transit seat, you might just find yourself with time on your hands!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Toronto Star recently ran a piece on how the TTC has become an extension of \u201chome\u201d for its users.
