One of the most valuable legacies of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games is the reliance on transit<\/a>. In fact, the first vivaNext rapidway <\/a>on Highway 7 East in Markham <\/a>and Richmond Hill <\/a>is actively being used <\/a>during the Pan Am Games.<\/p>\n

And it turns out there\u2019s more to the story.<\/p>\n

In an article in this morning\u2019s Globe and Mail, urban transportation reporter Oliver Moore points out that the experience of all these Pan Am transit riders is painting a picture of how great having effective efficient mass transit <\/a>can be when transit systems\u00a0are in place, and\u00a0when transit is\u00a0actively supported and promoted.<\/p>\n

For example:
\n\u2022 The transit agencies across the GTHA are working together more
\n\u2022 People are changing their habits as drivers become riders
\n\u2022 Buses on HOV lanes maintain schedules or are often ahead of schedule<\/p>\n

\u201cFor riders, it is a glimpse of how fast and reliable surface transportation can be \u2013 offering a real alternative \u2013 if it does not have to compete with other traffic,\u201d notes Moore.<\/p>\n

Now\u2019s that\u2019s a legacy we @vivaNext can get excited about!<\/p>\n
