Rapid transit is on the way to Vaughan, but it\u2019s about more than just transit. Once the rapidway projects are complete, new <a title=\"blog: Strong foundations\" href=\"http:\/\/vivanext.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/13\/strong-foundations\/\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure <\/a>will be in place, including <a title=\"blog: sometimes construction is what you don't see\" href=\"http:\/\/vivanext.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/14\/sometimes-construction-is-what-you-don%E2%80%99t-see\/\" target=\"_blank\">utilities <\/a>and <a title=\"blog: Check out the keith bridge progress\" href=\"http:\/\/vivanext.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/03\/check-out-the-keith-bridge-progress\/\" target=\"_blank\">bridges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>crossing the bridge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One bridge that cannot be missed is the CN MacMillan Bridge, crossing over the largest rail yard in Canada. The MacMillan Yard was established in the 1950s and is named after one of CN\u2019s founders, Norman John MacMillan. The yard operates 24 hours a day and handles over a million train cars per year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>bigger and better<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of widening Highway 7, the CN MacMillan Bridge needed to be <a title=\"news release: Expansion od the CN MacMillan Bridge Underway\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/newsroom\/related\/mediarelease\/expansion-of-the-cn-macmillan-bridge-underway-in-the-city-of-vaughan\/\" target=\"_blank\">expanded <\/a>a total of 8.5 metres on the south and north side. This involved rebuilding the underlying structure with 8,000 tonnes of backfill, 10 new vertical piers, and 18,000 tonnes of steel reinforcing 13,000 tonnes of cement, and laying a new road surface \u2013 all without disrupting CN rail operations below!<\/p>\n<p><strong>better for people too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new bridge will have two new rapidway lanes, but it\u2019s not just for driving. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to enjoy the view as they cross on the <a title=\"blog: Streetscape - where form meets function\" href=\"http:\/\/vivanext.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/01\/streetscape-where-form-meets-function\/\" target=\"_blank\">improved sidewalks and a bike lane<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re driving on the bridge in the coming weeks, you may notice the lanes being reconfigured, and a <a title=\"project update: Lane closures along Highway 7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vivanext.com\/projectupdate\/project\/vaughan\/related\/projectupdate\/lane-closures-along-highway-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">crane <\/a>being \u201cwalked\u201d from one side of the road to the other.<\/p>\n<p>Once the rapidway project and the subway extension are done, this major transportation hub will be transformed for any mode of travel \u2013 rail, bus, and subway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Highway 7 West is changing quickly, with beautiful new sidewalks, tree planters and vivastations at Creditstone and Keele.
