As rapidway construction on Yonge\nStreet in Richmond Hill progresses, dedicated bus lanes and vivastations are\nbeing built in the centre lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the way that signalized\nintersections work is changing \u2013 especially if you\u2019re a pedestrian, or a driver\nturning left or wanting to make a U-turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what to watch for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dedicated lefts and U-turns now\nhappen at intersections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signalized intersections will now\nhave a dedicated left-turn traffic signal. This means that drivers can make\nleft turns or U-turns only when the left-turn signal is illuminated. The\nprotected movement through the intersection makes it safe and efficient to get you\nwhere you\u2019re going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach driveways mid-block<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get to driveways located\nmid-block on the other side of the road, drivers will no longer be able to turn\nleft between intersections; instead drivers should make a U-turn at the next\nsignalized intersection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making a left at an intersection is\nsafer than cutting across multiple lanes of traffic, and ensures that drivers\ntrying to turn left get their turn, and don\u2019t have to rush through a yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes for pedestrians<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new intersections will be wider\nwith more lanes and new traffic signals. At intersections that will have\nvivastations, pedestrians may cross the road in two stages if unable to get to\nthe other side during the first signal. A countdown signal will indicate how\nmany seconds pedestrians have left to safely cross the street.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
